Educational Diagnostician Certification Program
Texas A&M University-Commerce
Pre-Requisites:
1.   Acceptance into department’s master’s degree program for Diagnostician certification. (If master’s degree is currently held, acceptance into Diagnostician certification program is required);

2.   Admission to the Graduate School;

3.   Completion of deficiency/degree plan (Coursework applied to certification cannot exceed 6 years of age at the time of program completion);

4.   M.S./M.Ed. candidates must successfully complete the comprehensive exam (May be taken after 18 hours in psychology/special education as identified on deficiency/degree plan); M.A. candidates do not take the comprehensive exam. See major advisor;

5.   Two years teaching experience (Approved by SBEC and may be obtained concomitantly with degree/deficiency plan completion); and

6.   Only 4 courses may be transferred from a non-degree to a degree program.

Practicum requirements:

7.   Approval for Practicum is required. Approval for practicum will be given when the student has completed SpEd 520, SpEd/Psy 535, SpEd/Psy 572, SpEd/Psy 573 and SpEd 574 and Psy 635 with a GPA of 3.50 or greater; student demonstrates the above criteria and has 6 semester hours or fewer to complete; Three semester hours must be Psy 691.

 

TExES Requirements:
8.   A minimum of 12 graduate semester hours taken at A&M-Commerce as certifying institution;
9.   Approval for TExES will be given when all coursework is completed or during the last semester of coursework (not to exceed 6 SH);
10.   Barcode approval to take the Educational Diagnostician examination will be given when the student has completed SpEd 520, SpEd/Psy 535, SpEd/Psy 572, SpEd/Psy 573 and SpEd 574 with a GPA of 3.50 or greater; student demonstrates the above criteria and has 6 semester hours or fewer to complete; Three semester hours must be Psy 691.
11.   An overall GPA of 3.50 over ALL coursework used for certification.

Probationary Certificate Requirements:

12.   Student may apply for a Probationary Certificate upon successful completion of the TExES Educational Diagnostician examination and all coursework requirements for testing (see #10 above).

Student seeking Masters’ degree

  • Applies to the Graduate School

  •    - Submits transcripts, letters and all requirements necessary
  • Meets all requirements for admission to graduate school

  • Graduate School forwards candidates file to Department of Psychology and Special Education for consideration for admittance to program.

  • Upon acceptance, Department sends letter to candidate advising them of admission to program.

  • Upon receipt of letter, student applies to professional certification program. Makes an appointment with Advisor to have plan completed; takes confirmation sheet, $50 check for professional certification program fee and letter of recommendation (may be a copy of a letter of recommendation for admission to Graduate School) to the appointment.

  • When plan is completed and filed in department office, a copy of plan, confirmation page, $50 fee and letter of recommendation will be sent to the Certification Office.


  • Student with Masters’ degree

  • Applies to Department of Psychology and Special Education for consideration for admittance to program.

  • Upon acceptance, Department sends letter to candidate advising them of admission to program.

  • Upon receipt of letter, student applies to professional certification program and pays fee.

  • Student makes an appointment with Advisor to have plan completed; takes confirmation sheet, $50 check for professional certification program fee and letter of recommendation for admission to program completed by someone in their school sector to appointment.


  • Before a student applies to SBEC for certification they will need to make sure that their file in the Certification Office (contact Kathy Black 903-886-5904) is complete and contains:

  • a letter of recommendation for this certificate

  • a service record indicating two years of public school teaching experience
